Our story starts in 1906 with the establishment of brewery De Zwaan. Honouring history while emphasising global ambitions, we are now known as The Swaen. Now – 120 years later – we’re taking a moment to reflect. Why did we once choose a swan as our inspiration? What does it symbolise? And why does it still matter today? Read the story behind our name.
A timeless symbol of grace
The name Zwaan – and in extension Swaen – wasn’t chosen at random. The swan has long been a powerful symbol across cultures. Especially in Europe, where it represents:
- Grace Just like our malt, the swan is known for its clean beauty. It moves with grace, but beneath the surface there’s strength and purpose.
- Transformation The swan’s life cycle, from an awkward grey cygnet to an elegant adult, mirrors the malting process itself. Raw barley transforms into something noble. In our case malt, full of flavour and potential.
- Craftsmanship In Dutch heritage, the swan also stood for nobility and craftsmanship, often appearing on coats of arms, guild emblems, and town seals. It’s a fitting symbol for a maltster that always held itself to high standards of quality, tradition, and character.
The real story: where brewers and swans crossed paths
But there’s more to the name than symbolism alone – there’s also a touch of real history. In the early 20th century, and even centuries before, swans were often found near breweries and taverns, especially in the Low Countries. Why? Because of the spent grain.
After mashing, brewers would dispose of the leftover grains, often by leaving them near water or feeding them to livestock. Swans – elegant but opportunistic – quickly learned that brewery waste meant easy food. It became common to see these majestic birds gathering around breweries.

Local authorities loved the sight. A city with swans was seen as picturesque, proud, and noble – so much so that municipalities sometimes held brewers responsible for the welfare of the birds. Brewers, in turn, took it as a point of pride: feeding and protecting the swans became part of the community’s rhythm, and a symbol of the brewery’s place in civic life.
Naming a brewery “De Zwaan” in 1906 wasn’t just poetic – it was grounded in the local landscape and the traditions of both brewing and urban life.

120 years later, the swan still soars
As we celebrate 120 years of The Swaen, we honour the past by sharing the story behind our name – but we also look ahead. The swan continues to guide us: elegant yet strong, traditional yet ever moving. From Zeeland to your brewhouse, The Swaen remains a symbol of purity, balance, and bold transformation – in every grain of malt we produce.
Here’s to the next 120 years.
