Sharing malt knowledge: a CRAFT College recap

Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting a CRAFT College at The Swaen. A group of passionate brewers joined us for a day of learning. Throughout the day, we explored the world of malt and its essential role in brewing. As a result, the event became a valuable moment of knowledge-sharing, inspiring conversations, and deeper connection between brewers and maltsters.

What is CRAFT?

CRAFT is the Dutch association for independent craft brewers. The organisation proudly represents over 200 members from across the Netherlands. Above all, CRAFT supports the growth and professionalisation of the Dutch craft beer sector.

One of their most valuable initiatives is the CRAFT College programme. These educational sessions are designed to help brewers expand their technical knowledge. In addition, they offer up-to-date insights into brewing trends and industry developments. Moreover, the sessions provide an excellent opportunity to connect with fellow brewers and experts.

CRAFT College: The Malter’s Factor

This edition of the CRAFT College took place at The Swaen and focused on the topic “The Malter’s Factor.” During our presentation, we explored how the quality of barley and malt directly impacts the final result in beer.

First, we returned to the basics. What is barley, and why does it remain the number one grain for malting? After laying that foundation, we moved on to the key quality parameters that matter most to both maltsters and brewers.

For maltsters, important factors include moisture content, protein levels, and germination capacity. On the other hand, brewers focus more on soluble protein, colour, extract yield, and filtration. These parameters not only influence each stage of the brewing process but also affect the final beer’s flavour, clarity, and consistency.

In addition to technical insights, we also took the opportunity to share our own story. We spoke about the history of The Swaen and how our company has grown over time. Furthermore, we discussed our vision for the future and our continued commitment to quality and innovation.

Equally important, we explained how our specialty malts help craft brewers around the world create distinctive, flavourful beers. Through close collaboration and mutual understanding, we believe malt can elevate every brew.

A look behind the scenes

To wrap up the day, we invited the participants for a guided tour of our malthouse. During the tour, brewers saw every stage of the malting process up close – from steeping and germination to kilning and roasting. Consequently, it gave them a better understanding of how raw barley is transformed into high-quality malt.

Finally, we ended the day with informal drinks and engaging conversations. It was the perfect way to reflect, connect, and continue the exchange of ideas.

In conclusion, we’d like to thank CRAFT and all participants for making this CRAFT College a memorable and meaningful experience. We look forward to more collaborations and to sharing knowledge with the wider craft beer community in the future.
